The Skyhawks hard nose physical defense was enough for them to pick up  a tough win against  the 12th ranked team in the nation, Southeastern Community College.

Southeastern came into play with a glaring size advantage with 6 of their players standing over 6”7. This height advantage would prove to be a hindrance early on for the Skyhawks as they struggled to defend the paint.

Racking up 5 team fouls in the first 5 minutes of play. Southeastern was unable to take advantage of SVCC’s foul trouble and build a lead due to their own careless play on the offensive side.

SVCC would take control of the pace of the game around the halfway point of the first half with a bundle of quick steals from  guard Sean Burress, leading to some easy fastbreak buckets for the sophomore. Guards LA Fayne and Jake Gaither also were able to get into the passing lanes at the back end of the first half helping Sauk build up a 14 point lead at half, greatly in part to their tremendous defense leading to easy points in transition.

In an attempt to slow down the Skyhawk offense coming out of the half Southeastern came out in a full court press forcing two quick Skyhawk turnovers. Speeding up SVCC’s offense with the full court press Southeastern began to gain momentum around the the 8 minute mark, but any momentum was extinguished by another quick steal by Burress who set up a lob pass to, freshman, Jordan Brown  bringing the bench to its feet in an uproar forcing Southeastern to take a full timeout to adjust.

Southeastern would come out of the full timeout extremely physical battling back and cutting the lead to single digits for the first time since the beginning of the first half, the skyhawk lead would be cut down to 6 in the last two minutes of the 2nd half, but a pair of untimely fouls in the last minute of play would put to rest any hope of a southeastern comeback.

With the final score 77-72 SVCC moves to 3-0 on the young season, with upcoming matchups, South Plains, Triton, and CSI to start out the month of December. More information about the team and schedule can be found on the SVCC  athletics page.
